Hershey

Hershey, a borough of Dauphin County was originally named Derry Church, Pennsylvania. For schools, and official purposes it is known today as Derry Township. It was renamed Hershey in 1906 after the growing popularity of Hershey’s chocolate.  It is popularly called “Chocolatetown, USA.”  And also often referred to as “The Sweetest Place on Earth.”  The community is located 14 miles east of Harrisburg and is part of the Harrisburg Metropolitan area.

The town is named for Milton S. Hershey, who founded his chocolate factory in 1905 and then opened his park in 1907 which to this day continues to expand into the national amusement park that it is.  Milton S. Hershey was known for his profound sense of moral responsibility and benevolence.  He built a model town for his employees which still stands as one of our premier model towns today. His benevolence was especially prevalent when in 1909 he established the Milton S. Hershey school for underpriveledged, orphan boys.  That school continues to thrive in the community for both boys and girls.

The community is also home to the H. B. Reese Candy Company, Hershey’s Chocolate World which offers a factory store and virtual tour ride of The Hershey Company, Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company which owns and operates Hersheypark, Hersheypark Stadium and other attractions such as ZooAmerica, Hershey Gardens, and is a major employer of the community and surrounding area.

Hershey also offers the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, highly reputable as a medical community and has a high focus on research and teaching in the medical community as seen by their growing medical college.  The medical center also has the famed Life Lion critical care transport helicopter used around the area. The Pennsylvania State Police Academy is located in Hershey and the Derry Township police is a nationally recognized law enforcement agency.  Hershey is also home to the Hershey Bears, a professional ice hocky team playing in the American Hockey League, and is currently the top affiliate of the NHL Washington Capitals.
